How many Gundam titles will the gaming public tolerate? Apparently the answer is pretty far off as a slew of new Mobile Suit games are on the way from Namco Bandai. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus is the latest PlayStation 2 in the works in the Gundam universe, and the game looks to be a bit different than some of the more technical titles that we've seen previously.
Rather than thrusting you into a career where you customize your suit and work your way up through the ranks of amateur and then professional Mobile Suit pilots, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus is much more of a classic, straight-up fighting game.
While you can of course take to the air, much of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus's combat is located on or near the ground. That is, the Mobile Suits in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus stay near the ground at almost all times and battle more like you'd expect to see in a 2D fighter than a 3D Gundam title.
Rather than one-on-one battles however, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus will feature arena skirmishes with a number of foes all going at it simultaneously. The Mobile Suit selection screen is rather massive -- we're not quite sure of the exact count of options here, but it's pretty obvious that you won't get bored of the choices anytime soon in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus.
Before each battle in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus, you'll have the rather basic option of selecting whether you want your Mobile Suit to focus on Speed, Rush or Power. With Rush, you're able to close in on the enemy almost instantly and deliver a killing blow. Speed allows you to boost around the arena for short periods of time, while Power, well, makes you more powerful. The triple-set of options in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus should lend a small element of paper/rock/scissors to the mix.
Visually, the PlayStation 2 is really starting to show its age as the ground textures in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus are rather blocky. The Mobile Suits look reasonable enough, and the game runs great, but the whole thing has a rather rough look to it. Hopefully Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Federation vs. ZAFT II Plus will get a bit of a cleanup before it hits store shelves.
