To start things off, Gundam Battle Universe is in Japanese. Save for the mission titles and a few English words here and there. Also, I have never played any Gundam title on the PSP. So, I'm not a fan boy.
CONTROLS: I was struggling with the controls for a while. Fortunately, there is a training mission in the campaign mode which teach you from the very basic such as Movement, How to Attack, Speeding, Special Atk, Charge Atk, etc. It can take quite a while to go through all the training mission but it is worth it and there is a demonstration of which buttons to be pressed.
GAMEPLAY: Once you have gone through the hassle of the control, you will find that this game is quite easy to pick up. You use you R button to lock onto the target and perform various attacks such as Melee (it's called grapple in the game, Lolx!), Primary weapon and Secondary weapon. You can also change your Primary weapon using L+Square button. The campaign feature 5 era of the Gundam Universe, the 79, 83, 87, 93 and Extra. For some people, who may not be familiar with Gundam, We have the Original Gundam, Stardust Memories, Z Gundam, ZZ Gundam and lastly Gundam the Return of Char. At the very beginning, you will be asked to create your own Pilot, Normal or New Type Solider, choose your Partner who will be control by the AI and your favorite operator.
You begin with a weaker MS initially. As you play through the campaign, you will unlock more units like the Z Gundam and Hi nu Gundam for say. You will also get to unlock the Official story pilots from the campaigns. the EXTRA campaign is to gain unlocks MS and pilots that are not in the campaign featured by the game such as F91 Gundam. Each campaign takes up about 14-20 mission except for Return of Char, I think it's about 10.
At the beginning of every mission, you will be asked to select the pilot and your MS for you and your partner. You can upgrade you MS by using MS point earn at the end of every mission. Your MS point reward is determined by your performance of that mission, your character stat also increases at the end of the mission according to the action he takes, making him more powerful for the upcoming mission.
GRAPHIC: I think it's at an acceptable range for a PSP kind of Hardware besides the loading time is unexpectedly fast!... I have to wait for just about 3-4 seconds before the mission starts but after that there is no more loading time, you can spin around shoot your enemies and even when the enemies spawn, they dont take up any loading time.
SOUND: I think personal preference is at work here. If you are a Gundam fan, then you will probably recognize and enjoy the soundtrack while battling. The sound effects works pretty well; "zooom", "Bangg!!", "Boooom!" what have you.
OVERALL: Due to the fact that this game is in Japanese, you will not get much of the story or understand what is going on. However, This is an awesome game and it is quite player-friendly whether you are a fan of Gundam, you should be able to pick up this game without a problem.
If you are a fan of Gundam and you own a PSP, then this is a must-have title!
